We are ready for Halloween!

My theme today was Halloween. I found a couple of playlists of Halloween music on Apple Music, and we started with the one that is designated as a sing-along playlist. Apple Music Sing is a feature that I don't have on my devices, but there are playlists that are made for it, so all the songs on the playlist have scrolling lyrics. That's good enough for us.

We started with a song that we loved singing, but we wondered what made it a Halloween selection. The others were pretty obvious. I made a connection with newer songs about love being magical and the singer feeling like he's under a spell and two much older songs, by Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. There were a lot of similarities. And, we noticed that those older songs are pretty hard to sing along with. Sometimes we think that new songs are tricky. We laughed about how we "know" lots of songs and can sing the chorus, but have no idea what the words in the verses are, maybe because we just danced and didn't worry about the lyrics. It's something that comes up again and again. It's always fun to see and sing the lyrics to older songs we only ever heard, but never saw written down.

I struggle to try to explain what it is that we do, and why I like it so much. Deb gave me a good way to describe it: It's like singing along at a concert, with a band you love. We're like friends that went to a concert together. Except, you don't have the huge crowd and the lights, and the volume isn't that loud, we're sitting in armchairs, and we have lyrics! And tea and muffins (pumpkin apple muffins today).

We agreed that this time of day is better, and although an hour seems to fly by, it's a good amount of time. I hope we get even more people coming next week.

Here are some of the songs we sang and listened to:

  • Sweet Dreams are Made of This by the Eurythmics
  • Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell
  • Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr.
  • One Way or Another (Hocus Pocus 2 Version) by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy (this was fun!)
  • Thriller by Michael Jackson (we didn't do the zombie dance)
  • Bad Moon Rising by CCR
  • Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon
  • Abracadabra by Steve Miller Band
  • Witchcraft by Frank Sinatra
  • That Old Black Magic by Sammy Davis Jr
  • Sugar Sugar by the Archies
  • I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow

There are so many fun Halloween songs! Maybe you'll sing some tomorrow-before the Jays' Game?

Singing Together in July and August

I posted this on my YRCC blog, and I think it applies to my Trinity Singers too. While we’re not singing together in July and August, please find opportunities to sing in other places and with other people.  You can always sing in your car and in your kitchen. You can accept all invitations to cottages, camping, and beach days, and do some campfire singing. Or, sing while you paddle around in a lake. Sound carries over water, so have some buddies join you if you’re not comfortable with a solo performance.  Orchestrate some backyard sing-alongs if you can.  Singing outdoors in the summer is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. I’ve enjoyed the free concerts in Aurora and Newmarket in the past. They have ‘tribute bands’ who perform all the hits you know, and you’ll want to sing and dance along. (would be nice if they projected the lyrics for us, because we're used to having those words now) I’ve added these concerts to my YRCC Calendar to encourage my choristers to go. I’...

June 5th, 2025 Sing-along Café is Outdoors!

We're going to be outside, singing along with a cover band, Telltale Sounds, at the 2025 Newmarket Music Series Lineup Launch Party! Then, we'll sing and dance to Glenn Marais and the Mojo Train!  I think we'll want to bring lawn chairs, and maybe a snack and a beverage. There will be a food truck there if you want to get something fun.  We are asked to bring a Food Bank Donation. We'll head down together on foot from the Park Street entrance at 6:15. Hopefully that will be early enough to get parking behind the church and get a spot to sit at Riverwalk Commons.  We'll walk across Main Street, down the stairs to the parking lot, and across towards the community centre, unless some of us have issues with stairs, then we'll go down the ramp at the next block that ends up just behind the community centre.  Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather (should be perfect, not too warm, not too cool). I'm a big fan of these free summer concerts. Can't wait...
