Sing-along Café Thursday, December 11th, 2025

We continued with our Christmas theme and with Christmas baking. We added a fun Hanukkah song too. I brought a variety of baked and bought cookies, but we sang and chatted quite a bit so we didn't really make a dent in that tin of goodies.

It was a lovely hour well-spent.  We'll have more Christmas music and more holiday goodies next Thursday! Will we see you there?

The first thing we did was watch a YouTube video that I mentioned last time. Here is a link.  For King and Country is an Australian-American contemporary Christian band, actually a duo of two brothers. The energy and power of their live version of The Little Drummer Boy is electrifying. I highly recommend watching it.

The next thing we did was to listen to and sing along with (as much as possible) the song Happy Hanukkah by Walk Off the Earth, featuring Scott Helman. It's got a fun and uplifting reggae feel, and a catchy chorus. We wondered about the lyrics: "I light up a flame in the name of the Lion of Judah" and "my love shine through from Mount Zion". Lion of Judah is interesting. It can refer to Jesus, his lineage being in the tribe of Judah, descended from King David. The Lion of Judah (a lion) is also a Jewish national and cultural symbol, traditionally regarded as the symbol of the tribe of Judah. And, The Lion of Judah is a prominent symbol in the Rastafari movement. It represents Emperor Haile Selassie I as well as being a symbol of strength, kingship, pride and African sovereignty. That ancient and royal Ethiopian connection is so interesting, and it's the Rastafarian one that jumps to mind because of the reggae rhythms. Mount Zion is also heard often in reggae music, referring to Ethiopia or Africa, and as a utopian place of unity, peace and freedom.  Light and peace, harmony, traditions, ancient and new, so when commercialism distracts, we are reminded of the deeper spiritual significance of the eight-day festival of Hanukkah and of Chritsmas at the same time. Brilliant.

Here's a list of some other songs we sang and listened to:

  • The Little Drummer Boy by For King and Country
  • Happy Hanukkah by Walk Off the Earth, with Scott Helman
  • It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year by Andy Williams
  • A Holly Jolly Christmas by Burl Ives
  • Song for a Winter's Night by Gordon Lightfoot
  • Song for a Winter's Night by Ingrid Michaelson
  • The Gift by Aselin Debison, Peter Asher& George Massenburg
  • The Christmas Shoes by NewSong (well, just a bit of that one-tears)
  • Joy to the World by Hillsong Worship & Aodhan King

Singing Together in July and August

I posted this on my YRCC blog, and I think it applies to my Trinity Singers too. While we’re not singing together in July and August, please find opportunities to sing in other places and with other people.  You can always sing in your car and in your kitchen. You can accept all invitations to cottages, camping, and beach days, and do some campfire singing. Or, sing while you paddle around in a lake. Sound carries over water, so have some buddies join you if you’re not comfortable with a solo performance.  Orchestrate some backyard sing-alongs if you can.  Singing outdoors in the summer is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. I’ve enjoyed the free concerts in Aurora and Newmarket in the past. They have ‘tribute bands’ who perform all the hits you know, and you’ll want to sing and dance along. (would be nice if they projected the lyrics for us, because we're used to having those words now) I’ve added these concerts to my YRCC Calendar to encourage my choristers to go. I’...

TOMORROW! Pride Festival, Trans March, Pride Parade

June 5th, 2025 Sing-along Café is Outdoors!

We're going to be outside, singing along with a cover band, Telltale Sounds, at the 2025 Newmarket Music Series Lineup Launch Party! Then, we'll sing and dance to Glenn Marais and the Mojo Train!  I think we'll want to bring lawn chairs, and maybe a snack and a beverage. There will be a food truck there if you want to get something fun.  We are asked to bring a Food Bank Donation. We'll head down together on foot from the Park Street entrance at 6:15. Hopefully that will be early enough to get parking behind the church and get a spot to sit at Riverwalk Commons.  We'll walk across Main Street, down the stairs to the parking lot, and across towards the community centre, unless some of us have issues with stairs, then we'll go down the ramp at the next block that ends up just behind the community centre.  Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather (should be perfect, not too warm, not too cool). I'm a big fan of these free summer concerts. Can't wait...
