My Singing Night at Trinity 2024 Thursday, April 4th

What to call this evening of music, connection, harmony, and spirit?

This "My Singing Night", our theme was Easter and Spring. In the theme of new beginnings, we spent time talking about a re-branding. We tried to come up with some new names for these wonderful Thursday evening singing and fellowship gatherings.

What should we call this? Armchair Singers? Songs and Friends? Thursday Playlist? I'll come up with something.

We'll have a new poster and we have this new blog-website. Hopefully, we'll get some more people coming out. It's such a good thing!

We talked about the unique nature of what we do every Thursday evening together. Singing, but not choir, and not performing, just singing together like a sing-along, but there's no guitar, nobody playing piano. We're singing along like in the car, singing to the radio or a playlist. Yeah, it's like that, like playing your playlist in the car and everyone sings along. But, we have the words on the big screen so we don't have to have them memorized.

We sang along to these songs and talked about them a little. At the end of the night we turned off the lights and danced a little with Donna Summer to Spring Affair for our Spring and Easter theme, and to Total Eclipse of the Heart in honour of Monday's (nearly, here in Newmarket) Total Eclipse of the Sun!

Here's the list of songs we sang:

  • Hallelujah Chorus by  The Choir & Orchestra of Pro Christe
  • Celebrate Jesus by Don Moen
  • Tell The World by Hillsong United
  • Hymns Medley: Amazing Grace, etc by Anthem Lights
  • Hallelujah by Phillips, Craig & Dean

  • I Can See Clearly Now by Johnny Nash and by Jimmy Cliff
  • Good Day Sunshine by The Beatles

  • Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks
  • Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra
  • A Day in the Life by The Beatles
  • Sunshine on My Shoulders by John Denver
  • I’m into Something Good by Herman’s Hermits

  • Closing Time by Semisonic

Praise Team Songs Affirming Celebration Service June 16th

Besides My Lighthouse, I'm recommending that the Praise Team sing Beloved by Jordan Feliz with Amelia singing the verses solo, so that the words can be heard. Beloved would be an Anthem, while Lighthouse is an inclusive Hymn with the children doing actions. Check out the video and lyrics below. There's another one that the Praise Team loved, called Change My Heart, O God , that we think everyone will want to sing. It's simple and prayerful. I'm reminded of the statement about being Affirming, that we want people to know that we're unlearning prejudice and descrimination to become an inclusive and safe place for everyone. Head full of questions, how can you measure up? To deserve affection, to ever be enough for this existence When did it get so hard? Your heart is beating, alive and breathing And there's a reason why you are essential, not accidental And you should realize You are beloved I wanted you to know You are beloved Let it soak into your soul Oh, forg...

Thursday, April 18 Sing-along Café Review

The theme for the evening was: Songs with La-las (and other nonsense: ooh, doo-dah, na-na, scoobie-doobie, bum-ba-bum, hey!). I call all of these little non-word lyrics la-las. They're often my favourite part of a song. Everyone can sing those words, usually. With scat singing, not usually, and with yodeling, not everyone. But, think about the Beatles song Hey Jude. At the end, everyone can sing along with the na-nas and some of us even like to harmonize with them. When my daughter was writing songs, I urged her to put some nonesense la-las in her songs. Don't worry about finding beautiful, powerful words for all the verses, or all the lines of the chorus. Sometimes, the lack of words makes a melody more powerful.  Here's the list of songs we sang and listened to: Can't Get You Out of My Head   by Kylie Minogue Everything   by Michael Bublé Those Were the Days   by Mary Hopkin Hey Jude   by the Beatles Tom's Diner   by Suzanne Vega &DNA De Do Do Do, De ...
