We stayed in the 1970s for most of our hour, but ventured into the 80s for a few songs. As usual, we laughed at some of the lyrics we had misunderstood or totally missed when we were young. Often when we dance to a song, we don't really listen, and maybe just sing along with the chorus. The other thing we laughed about was how much drug culture we noticed in the seventies songs. We wouldn't have noticed it then, as some of us were still quite young then.
We talked about unique elements in songs that we wouldn't have thought would be good, but they are. The b-b-b-Benny stuttering and the n-n-n-nothing yet and other stuttering caught our attention. We decided that it not just super-fun to sing, but it was also very inclusive. So cool to introduce stuttering into pop songs, and excellent that they are so well loved!
We could stay in the 70s and 80s longer, and we'll turn back to them again in the future, but next week our theme will be SPRING! Spring officially starts on Friday the 20th. It's the Persian New Year.
I baked yogurt carrot muffins with raisins, low fat and low sugar for our nibbles. And, we also had strawberries for an even healthier, and gluten- and dairy-free option. We talked about food allergies. My friend Lauren joined us again. How do you keep track of your friends' allergies? I try to make notes in my Contacts list in my phone. Like all lists, this one has to be read at the right time to work best. Which I actually did this time, but my no-flour and dairy-free peanut butter cookies failed. Good thing we meet to sing, not to eat.
Here are some of the songs we sang and listened to:
- What a Fool Believes by the Doobie Brothers
- Bennie and the Jets by Elton John
- Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac
- You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet by Bachman-Turner Overdrive
- Good Times by Chic
- You're the One that I Want by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John
- You are the Sunshine of My Life by Stevie Wonder
- Another One Bites the Dust by Queen
- Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen
- Fame by Irene Cara
- Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes
- Mr. Tanner by Harry Chapin
