Sing-along Café Thursday, June 4th, 2026

A lovely afternoon in lovely company ending a lovely season of singing together!

It was so nice that the air conditioning was good and strong. I had prepared a no-bake treat, date brownies. They're made of dates blended with peanut butter and cocoa, a little flour and cinnamon and then pressed into a muffin cup, then topped with melted dark chocolate with a little butter. Frozen briefly and kept cold in the refrigerator. Yum! Little clementine oranges, nice and cool were also perfect for a hot afternoon.

Summer is coming and it's already hot outside, time for pools and cottages and slow afternoons on the porch or deck. Summer activities often feel like an escape, a vacation even for a few hours. Love was a good theme for our last time together for the season.

One of the themes of love songs that we encountered in the past and noticed again today was that the world sometimes disappears when you're with your lover. Just being together can be an escape. Love can take you away from your everyday concerns and push away any thoughts of the wacky world "out there".  It's especially so with a new love.

We noticed that a number of the songs were sweetly melodic, soft and slow, seemingly made especially for slow dancing. But, others were very bouncy and not obviously love songs.

My playlist was "Songs for Keeping Love Alive" and that love theme is a little different. I was thinking of songs that promise a forever love, of course, but also songs like The Pina Colada Song, where love needs a fresh new perspective to give it a boost so that it stays alive, or comes back to life.

Here are some of the songs we sang with and listened to:

  • As by Stevie Wonder and by George Michael (Not the best title. I would have called it "Always" or "Until". If you haven't heard this, please give it a listen. So good.)
  • Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes
  • Get On Your Feet by Gloria Estefan
  • Here, There and Everywhere by The Beatles
  • Hold Each Other by A Great Big World (You have to listen to this one and learn the story behind it!)
  • How Deep is Your Love by the Bee Gees (Why did I think they were Swedish? lol!)
  • I Melt With You by Modern English
  • I Will by the Beatles
  • Never Gonna Let You Go by Sergio Mendes
  • P.S. I Love You by the Beatles
  • Sealed With a Kiss by Brian Hyland
  • Together Forever by Rick Astley
  • You're Still the One by Shania Twain

Singing Together in July and August

I posted this on my YRCC blog, and I think it applies to my Trinity Singers too. While we’re not singing together in July and August, please find opportunities to sing in other places and with other people.  You can always sing in your car and in your kitchen. You can accept all invitations to cottages, camping, and beach days, and do some campfire singing. Or, sing while you paddle around in a lake. Sound carries over water, so have some buddies join you if you’re not comfortable with a solo performance.  Orchestrate some backyard sing-alongs if you can.  Singing outdoors in the summer is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. I’ve enjoyed the free concerts in Aurora and Newmarket in the past. They have ‘tribute bands’ who perform all the hits you know, and you’ll want to sing and dance along. (would be nice if they projected the lyrics for us, because we're used to having those words now) I’ve added these concerts to my YRCC Calendar to encourage my choristers to go. I’...
