Sing-along Café Thursday, May 21st, 2026

It was a lovely afternoon in lovely company!

With only 2 of us there, we did a lot of talking, and even looked at my vacation photos on the big screen. We nibbled on carrot and cucumber sticks, and left the banana muffins for my family to enjoy. We noted that veggies are so much more delicious when somebody else peels and cuts them, something I'm happy to do. Fruit is kind of the same. Sections of oranges, slices of apples, balls of cantelope to pop in your mouth, all better because they come with care.

Our theme was Flying and Sailing, and we both had good memories to share, and reminisced about all kinds of things that the songs inspired, including slow dancing.

There is a feeling of freedom, of being carefree, when you're moving over a body of water with wind and waves and lots of sky above. It's a weird and wonderful priviledge to be on a sailboat, or a tour boat like I was on recently. Flying in an airplane too is really extraordinary and astonishing when you think about it. We talked about the astronauts on the Artemis II mission last month-how wonderful they are. One imagines birds flying and fish swimming must feel almost weightless and free to move quickly and easily, gliding through the air or water. We talk about the weight of our worries, and the heaviness of being tied down by responsibilities. Maybe that's why flying and sailing feel like freedom.

We're going to do this theme again next week. There's lots of music to sing, and there are lots of ideas to explore on this theme.

Here's a list of some of the songs we sang and listened to:

  1. Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas
  2. Cool Change by Little River Band
  3. Reminiscing by Little River Band
  4. Leaving on a Jet Plane by John Denver
  5. Fly Away by John Denver
  6. Islands in the Stream by Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers
  7. Rio by Duran Duran
  8. Rocket Man by Elton John
  9. Sail On by the Commodores

Singing Together in July and August

I posted this on my YRCC blog, and I think it applies to my Trinity Singers too. While we’re not singing together in July and August, please find opportunities to sing in other places and with other people.  You can always sing in your car and in your kitchen. You can accept all invitations to cottages, camping, and beach days, and do some campfire singing. Or, sing while you paddle around in a lake. Sound carries over water, so have some buddies join you if you’re not comfortable with a solo performance.  Orchestrate some backyard sing-alongs if you can.  Singing outdoors in the summer is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. I’ve enjoyed the free concerts in Aurora and Newmarket in the past. They have ‘tribute bands’ who perform all the hits you know, and you’ll want to sing and dance along. (would be nice if they projected the lyrics for us, because we're used to having those words now) I’ve added these concerts to my YRCC Calendar to encourage my choristers to go. I’...
